St. Martin



Today we have the annual St. Martin's lantern parade at Mia's preschool. It's a German tradition to celebrate this holiday with a lantern parade. Mia's teacher asked us moms to bake some St. Martin rolls for tonight. St. Martin became famous for sharing his coat with a beggar by cutting it in half with his sword. Tonight the children at school will be sharing these rolls by breaking them in half.

The rolls are sweet and consist mostly of "Quark" a German kind of cream cheese/ ricotta and super yummy! The rolls remind me of scones.



Here is the recipe for 10 rolls: 

150g/ 5 oz. Quark 
(use ricotta instead if you can't find it)
75 g/ 2.5 oz sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
1 pinch of salt
6 spoons of canola or sunflower oil
4 spoons Milk
300g/ 10 oz. flour
1/2 tablespoon of baking powder
1 egg yolk

1. mix Quark, sugar, vanilla sugar, salt, oil and milk
2. sieve flour and baking powder over mixture
3. quickly knead into a smooth dough
4. form 10 small rolls and place on greased backing tray
5. brush rolls with egg yolk
6. bake for 15-20 minutes at 190 degrees C/ or 375 degrees F until golden

Heute haben wir Laternenumzug an Mia's Kita. Mia's Erzieherinnen haben uns Mütter gebeten, Sankt Martin's Wecken zu backen. Die Kinder werden die Wecken teilen wie Sankt Martin seinen Mantel geteilt hat. Eine schöne Idee, wie ich finde. Es sind Quarkwecken und ich finde sie superlecker!!!



Hier ist das Rezept für 10 Wecken:

150g Quark
75g Zucker
1 Pck Vanillezucker
1 Prise Salz
6 EL Öl
4 EL Milch
300g Mehl
1 Pck Backpulver
1 Eigelb

1. Quark mit Zucker, Vanillezucker, Salz, Öl und Milch verrühren.
2. Mehl und Backpulver mischen und über die Quarkmasse sieben.
3. Schnell zu einem geschmeidigen Teig kneten.
4. 10 Kleine Wecken formen und auf ein gefettetes Backblech legen.
5. Wecken mit Eigelb bestreichen.
6. Bei 190 Grad C 15-20 Minuten goldgelb backen.
