leaving California

Now I can finally spill the beans: We are moving back to Germany. After 7 years of suburban life in California we will be moving to Berlin in July. It's a new beginning for all of us. We haven't lived in Berlin before.

I have to admit that I have been homesick for quite some time now. Now that it's actually happening I will surely miss the American way of life, friends, the friendliness, the store opening hours, the vastness of the country, the nature and National Parks, the Pacific Ocean and the beautiful city of San Francisco and - of course - the weather.

I am looking forward to urban life in the metropole Berlin, being close to family and old friends, feeling at home, traveling in Europe, the change of the season, German "Gemuetlichkeit"  and German food - especially the good chocolate and fresh "Broetchen" (rolls) at every street corner.

We will be packing our belongings by the end of the month and ship everything in a 40 ft. container across "the pond" to Germany where it will be arriving end of August. Right on time for the beginning of the school year and my husband's new job.

For me it's now packing, sorting, organizing and saying Goodbye many many times. Have a nice June!

Jetzt kann ich es Euch endlich verraten: Wir gehen zurueck nach Deutschland. Nach 7 Jahren Leben in einem kalifornischen "suburb" werden wir im Juli nach Berlin ziehen. Es ist fuer uns alle ein Neuanfang, keiner von uns hat zuvor in Berlin gelebt.

Zugegebenermassen hatte ich schon eine laengere Weile Heimweh nach Deutschland. Jetzt wo wir wirklich zurueckgehen, werde ich natuerlich den "American way of life" vermissen, Freunde, die Freundlichkeit, die Ladenoeffungszeiten, die Weite der Landschaft, die Natur und die Nationalparks, den Pazifik und die wunderschoene Stadt San Francisco und natuerlich das Wetter.

Ich freue mich auf urbanes Leben in der Metropole Berlin, die Naehe zu Familie und alten Freunden, sich zuhause fuehlen, reisen in Europa, den Wechsel der Jahreszeiten, deutsche Gemuetlichkeit und deutsches Essen, allen voran die gute Schokolade und frische Broetchen an jeder Strassenecke.

Wir packen unsere Sachen zum Ende des Monats und verschiffen alles in einem 40 ft (12 m) langen Container ueber den grossen Teich nach Deutschland, wo er Ende August ankommt. Genau richtig zum Beginn des Schuljahres und dem neuen Job meines Mannes.

Fuer mich heisst es jetzt Packen, Sortieren, Organisieren und viele viele "Goodbyes". Habt einen schoenen Juni.
