Carpinteria

During our vacation we ended up in Carpinteria by accident and fell in love. It's a very cute beachtown just 12 miles South of Santa Barbara. Carpinteria State Beach offers a mile of beach for perfect swimming. 

The Spanish named the area Carpinteria because the Chumash tribe, which lived in the area, had a large seagoing canoe-building enterprise, or "carpentry shop" there, because of naturally-occurring surface tar which was used to seal the boats. 

Carpinteria has a laid back vibe but is preppier than Santa Cruz for example. Most of the city life happens around Linden Avenue with businesses, restaurants, cafes and some great antique and thrift shops. I wish I'd had more time (and money) to explore. Here is a fraction of what I saw...

Waehrend unseres Trips letzte Woche landeten wir zufaellig in Carpinteria und verliebten uns sofort in diese suesse Strandstadt,  20 km suedlich von Santa Barbara. Der Strand erstreckt sich direkt am Ende der Hauptstrasse ueber 1,5 km Kueste und ist ideal zum Schwimmen (leichte Brandung). 

"Carpinteria" ist Spanisch fuer Tischlerei. Der Ort wurde von den Spaniern so genannt, weil der dort ansaessige Chumash Stamm, hier eine grosse Kanu-Werkstatt unterhielt. Sie hatten sich an dieser Stelle angesiedelt, weil sie den dort natuerlich entstehenden Teer zur Versiegelung ihrer Kanus nutzen konnten.

Carpinteria hat eine sehr entspannte Atmosphaere und ist dabei etwas schicker als zum Beispiel Santa Cruz. Der Mittelpunkt des Stadtlebens ist Linden Avenue mit Geschaeften, Restaurants, Cafes und einigen tollen Antik- und Troedellaeden. Ich wuenschte, ich haette mehr Zeit (und Geld) gehabt. Hier ein kleiner Ausschnitt von dem, was ich entdeckt habe.

We stayed the night at Prufrock's Garden Inn directly on Linden Ave. It's a Bed &Breakfast that has rooms in the main house and cute garden cottages. We were lucky to score the last cottage. I would definitely recommend staying here. Although it's little bit on the kitschy side, it was very "gemuetlich" and the Innkeeper was so friendly. A continental breakfast in the dining room is included - we had cheese omelettes, homemade muffins and fresh fruit.

Wir haben im Prufrock's Garden Inn direkt auf der Linden Avenue uebernachtet, ein Bed & Breakfast mit Zimmern im Haupthaus und kleinen Gartencottages. Wir hattem Glueck und haben das letzte freie Cottage bekommen. Ich kann es wirklich waermstens weiterempfehlen. Auch wenn es ein bisschen kitschig ist, ist es sehr gemuetlich und die Besitzerin war soo nett. Das Fruehstueck im grossen Esszimmer ist inklusive (nicht unbedingt die Norm hier) - es gab Kaese-Omelett, selbstgebackene Muffins und frisches Obst.
